Packaging v2 brief: Jolly's system, done better

Date: 2026-11-05. Built from the two Jolly pouches Beau photographed (front and back), Jolly's own product renders and display boxes, and the compliance doc. This is the plan for the 15 Higgsfield variations; nothing has been generated yet. Reference images are in reference/jolly/.

1. Jolly's pack, transcribed

Front (both lines)

  • Matte stand-up pouch, tear notch, zipper, hang hole top center.
  • Two colored side stripes, thin white keyline, full-height dark center panel. Sleepy: plum panel, sky-blue stripes. Uplifting: forest green panel, lilac stripes. The same system runs across every Jolly product (gummies: navy panel, red stripes; night gummies: navy, violet; minis: pink, green), so the shelf reads as one brand.
  • Top-right white rounded tab: blend name in small bold caps plus an icon (cloud for Sleepy, peace sign for Uplifting, moon for Night, bolt for Sativa).
  • Center stack, white, all centered: JOLLY (Bodoni-style serif), product name in bold sans caps, pill-outlined cannabinoid callout ("CBD+CBN", "BROAD SPECTRUM CBD"), "DOG TREATS", two italic lines for mg per serving and mg per pouch.
  • Lower half: white posterized stencil dog portrait (Aussie for Sleepy, Yorkie for Uplifting).
  • Bottom pill: "30 Treats / Net Weight: 2oz (58.5g)".
  • No badges, no QR, no barcode on the front.

Back (Sleepy; Uplifting is identical except the cannabinoid)

  1. JOLLY wordmark.
  2. Description: "Our ALL NATURAL blueberry and peanut butter CBD+CBN treats help to naturally support your pup's relaxation. Perfect for daily use or stressful moments. CBN is known to help your pets fall asleep faster and longer." (Uplifting says CBG "is known to relieve pain and help with appetite in pets", which is a disease claim FDA has cited in warning letters.)
  3. Ingredients list (wheat flour, whole egg, peanut butter, dried bakery product, canola oil, glycerin, blueberry pomace, flavor, lactic acid, tocopherols).
  4. "Suggested Dosing Guide" table: under 25 lb 1–2 treats; 26–75 lb 2–5 treats; over 75 lb 5–7 treats; "should only be given every 12 hours".
  5. Six icon badges in a column: Real Fruit, Lab Tested, Cruelty Free, GMP Certified, Made in the US, GMO Free.
  6. Active Ingredients: per gram 5.12 mg CBD + 1 mg CBN; per treat 10 mg CBD + 2 mg CBN; per pouch 300 mg CBD + 60 mg CBN. (The front says 200 mg CBN per pouch. The back is right, the front is wrong.)
  7. Contact: website, helpline email, two Instagram handles.
  8. UPC-A barcode (850054855756 Sleepy, 850054855725 Uplifting; GS1 "850" prefix means they own a real GS1 US prefix).
  9. QR code, "Scan for COA's".
  10. Yellow triangle with a hemp leaf: "Not For Human Consumption!"
  11. FDA Disclaimer: "These products and statements have not been evaluated by the FDA and are not intended to treat, diagnose, or cure any disease."
  12. Warning paragraph: dogs only, new substances may irritate the gut, watch for a negative reaction, consult a veterinarian before use especially if pregnant, nursing or with known health issues.
  13. "Distributed By: Jolly Cannabis - Scottsdale, AZ 85250". No lot number, no best-by date, no spectrum statement, no THC statement, no storage line, no NASC cautions.

Verdict

The back is the best part of their pack: a clear hierarchy, a dosing table, a badge column, COA QR, barcode and a warning triangle all on a 4-inch pouch. Copy that structure. Fix the math, drop the disease claim, add what's missing (lot, best-by, THC statement, spectrum, storage, NASC-style cautions), and the dosing table becomes a size chart because each bag is one size.

2. The Bagel & Butters system

Same skeleton as Jolly so it feels familiar to the smoke-shop buyers who already stock them, different enough that it reads as a pet brand in a pet store.

SKU and barcode scheme

  • SKU codes: BB-CHL-S, BB-CHL-M, BB-CHL-L, BB-MOB-S/M/L, BB-DLY-S/M/L (9), plus three 6-count display boxes BB-CHL-DSP etc. (12 GTINs). Buy a GS1 US prefix with 100-GTIN capacity, not the 10-pack, to leave room for a cat line, a mini bag and multipacks (costs in section 5).
  • Lot format: YYMMDD-B plus blend letter, printed inkjet in the white box; best-by 18 months.
  • QR: static URL per lot (/coa/<lot>) so it never depends on a paid dynamic-QR service; the page shows the COA PDF, the potency summary in plain words, the batch date, and a "report a problem" link.

Back-panel copy, draft (Chill, Medium)

  • Header: Bagel & Butters · Chill · Hemp CBD Soft Chews for Medium Dogs (25–60 lb)
  • Description: "Small-batch soft chews made in Massachusetts with broad-spectrum hemp extract, chamomile, L-theanine and passion flower. Chill supports calm behavior and relaxation during travel, fireworks and vet visits. One chew a day, sized for your dog."
  • Active ingredients per chew: Broad-spectrum hemp extract (10 mg CBD), chamomile 50 mg, L-theanine 50 mg, passion flower 25 mg. Per bag: 300 mg CBD, 30 chews.
  • Inactive ingredients: peanut butter, banana, oat flour, sweet potato, glycerin, flaxseed, natural flavor, mixed tocopherols (final list from the manufacturer).
  • Directions: "Give 1 chew daily. Start with half a chew for the first 3 days. Up to 2 chews daily if needed." Then the size chart with this row bold: Small, under 25 lb, 5 mg · Medium, 25–60 lb, 10 mg · Large, 60 lb and up, 20 mg.
  • Cautions: the five NASC-style lines from the compliance doc.
  • Disclaimer: "This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration."
  • THC statement: "Broad-spectrum hemp extract. Non-detectable THC on every batch, below the lab's limit of quantitation. Less than 0.4 mg total THC per container."
  • Storage: "Store in a cool, dry place. Reseal after opening."

3. The 15 variations: five directions × three lines

Each generated image is a three-pouch family shot of one line in one direction: Small (Bagel), Medium (Butters), Large (Great Pyrenees), left to right, on a plain studio background. That shows the size system and the dog casting in every frame. Directions are the same across the three lines so you can compare like for like; the line only changes the accent color, the blend name, the icon and the dog's bandana.

#DirectionWhat it looks likeDog treatmentRisk
AStripes & panel (Jolly's skeleton, our colors)Blend-color center panel, cream side stripes, white keyline, size tab top right, white Fraunces wordmark, strength box low on the panelWhite posterized stencil portrait like Jolly's, but of our dogsClosest to Jolly; strongest for smoke shops, least distinct
BCream & illustrated (the current site mockup, refined)Cream body, blend-color top band with scalloped edge, black size pill, big blend name, strength box, four badge circlesFlat-color illustrated portraits with blend-color bandanaMost "pet store"; needs real illustration from the photos
CPhoto heroFull-bleed color-blocked pouch with a cut-out photo of the real dog filling the lower two thirds, type knocked out in white, size letter huge behind the dogReal photos of Bagel, Butters and a Great Pyrenees, studio-litNeeds good source photos; the Pyrenees is a dog Beau used to have, so old photos or a generated Pyrenees from reference
DKraft apothecaryNatural kraft pouch, one-color deep-brown print, blend color only in a wax-seal-style sticker and the size tab, serif-heavy, hand-drawn dog line art, "Small batch · Massachusetts" stampSingle-line engraving-style portraitsReads premium and local; one-color print is cheap; kraft film has a weaker barrier, so ask ePac for kraft-look laminate
EBig typeBlend color flood, enormous S / M / L letter as the hero, small wordmark, strength numbers as the second-biggest element, no dog on the front, dog on the backDog portrait moves to the back panelFastest read at ten feet on a shelf; least warm

Per line: A, B, C, D, E = 5. Three lines = 15 images. Each render includes the three sizes, so 45 pouches are shown in total.

Line-specific cues:

  • Chill: periwinkle, cloud or crescent-moon icon, Bagel/Butters/Pyrenees lying down.
  • Mobility: terracotta, a running-dog or hip-joint arc icon, dogs mid-stride.
  • Daily: sage, sun icon, dogs sitting and alert.

How the Higgsfield round will run (when you say go):

  1. Upload the dog photos and the Jolly reference photos as media.
  2. For each of the 15, one generate_image call at 2k, 4:3, with the brand palette hexes, the layout spec above, and the dog reference. Recraft V4.1 in utility mode for the clean flat directions (B, D, E) because it holds typography and flat color; Marketing Studio Image or Flux Kontext with image references for the photo and stencil directions (A, C).
  3. Expect the main text (brand, blend, S/M/L, mg) to render legibly and the fine print to be gibberish. These are direction studies. The print-ready files come from the SVG system on the site (or a designer in Illustrator) once a direction is picked, with real barcode, QR and lot box.
  4. Budget: the account has about 5,980 credits on the Ultra plan; 15 images at 2k is a small fraction of that, so there is room for a second round of five on the winning direction.

4. Weight classes

What the market already does

Nearly every CBD chew dosing chart breaks at 25, 50, 75 and 100 lb. The brands that sell separate sizes break at about 20–25 lb and 50–60 lb: HolistaPet (5 / 10 / 20 mg at under 20, 20–60, over 60 lb), Kradle melts (10–25 / 26–50 / 51+), Austin & Kat (S/M/L at 2.5 / 5 / 10 mg), Pet Releaf (small under 26 lb at 3 mg, medium-large at 6 mg), Suzie's (little dogs 2 mg, big dogs 6 mg). Single-SKU brands push giant dogs to 4–5 chews a day (Charlotte's Web, Pet Releaf's 101–150 lb row), which is the complaint Jolly's only review makes. Published rules of thumb run from 1 mg per 10 lb (Suzie's) to 2 mg per 10 lb (Austin & Kat) to 0.25–0.5 mg per lb (HolistaPet, Penguin).

US dog population by weight

No AVMA or Banfield table by weight band exists. Packaged Facts owner surveys (quoted in trade press, 2012–2021) put recently acquired dogs at about 40% under 25 lb, 23% at 25–40 lb and 37% over 40 lb. Splitting the top group at 60 lb using AKC breed weights (Labs 55–80, Goldens 55–75, Shepherds 50–90, Rottweilers 80–135 dominate it) gives the best estimate per dog:

BandShare of US dogsTypical breeds
Under 25 lbabout 40–45%Chihuahua, Yorkie, Dachshund, Beagle, most Frenchies
25–60 lbabout 28–32%Bulldog, Aussie, Husky, Pointer, Standard Poodle, most mixes
Over 60 lbabout 25–30%Lab, Golden, Shepherd, Rottweiler, Doberman, Pyrenees (85–115), Great Dane (110–175)

Recommendation: keep the bands, keep the strengths, add one line for giants

SizeBandmg CBD per chewmg per 10 lb at one chew a dayMascot
SmallUp to 25 lb52.0 at 25 lb, 5.0 at 10 lb (under 10 lb: start with half)Bagel
Medium26–60 lb101.7 at 60 lb, 3.8 at 26 lbButters
Large60 lb and up203.3 at 60 lb, 2.0 at 100 lb; over 120 lb: up to 2 chewsGreat Pyrenees
  • Why 60 lb and not 75 for Large: a 75 lb line puts most Labs, Goldens and Shepherds in "Medium", which is not how their owners think and not how large-breed food is labeled. HolistaPet, the closest three-strength analog, already uses over 60. Dogs over 60 lb are a quarter to a third of US dogs, enough to carry the SKU; over 75 is a thinner slice.
  • Why 5 / 10 / 20 and not 3 / 6 / 12: both sit inside the commercial convention. 5/10/20 matches HolistaPet exactly, matches Jolly's 10 mg head-on at Medium so the comparison is clean on a smoke-shop shelf, and reads as the stronger product. 3/6/12 would cut CBD input cost roughly 40% and mirror Pet Releaf; it is the fallback if the manufacturer's CBD price makes 20 mg chews too expensive at a $42.99 Large.
  • Giants: no fourth SKU. One printed line on the Large pack, "Over 120 lb: up to 2 chews daily," covers Danes, Mastiffs and Newfoundlands and mirrors the 100+ row every competitor chart carries. A Great Pyrenees at 85–115 lb is squarely one Large chew, so the mascot and the dose agree.
  • Frenchie caveat: the number one AKC breed tops out at 28 lb and Corgis at 30, just above the Small line. Keep 25 because it is the number owners already know, and the Medium pack's chart tells a 28 lb Frenchie owner that a Medium chew is fine.
  • First-run production split, by demand and by who buys premium: Small 40%, Medium 35%, Large 25%.

5. Barcodes, GS1 and QR

Company prefix, 100 items$750$1509 pouches, 3 display boxes, a cat line, minis, multipacks. Recommended.
Single GTINs$30 each, no renewal$0Cheapest for 9, but issued under GS1's own prefix, so no case-level GTIN-14s of your own.

Resold "cheap UPCs" are rejected by Amazon (it checks GS1's database and the brand on the prefix) and, per EDI guides, by Chewy. Jolly's 850-prefix barcodes are real GS1 US codes, so match that.

Symbology and size

UPC-A (GTIN-12) for US checkout. Nominal size 37.3 mm wide including quiet zones and 22.9 mm tall; never below 80% (29.8 × 18.3 mm); do not truncate the bar height; black on white, bars parallel to the pouch's web direction; verify on the actual laminate to ISO/IEC 15416. The Small pouch at 4 inches wide fits a 100% code with room.

One QR for the lab results and, later, for checkout

Encode a GS1 Digital Link in the QR, on our own domain:

https://bagelandbutters.com/01/0<GTIN-12>/10/<LOT>

A phone camera opens the batch page; a Sunrise 2027 point-of-sale scanner reads the GTIN out of the same code. GS1's guidance for the transition: keep the UPC on the pack, place the QR within 50 mm of the UPC's center, 4-module quiet zone, X-dimension around 0.5 mm (a Version 3 code is about 15 mm square). The URL is static per lot, so it never depends on a paid dynamic-QR vendor; the redirect table lives on our server. If per-lot printing is not available on the first run, print a per-SKU QR to /01/0<GTIN-12> whose page has a lot picker, with the lot and best-by inkjetted next to it (Florida's hemp rule explicitly allows the lookup-portal form; Texas requires batch ID, batch date and a QR or URL to the COA).

What the COA page shows

Product and strength, lot, batch date, best-by, lab name and accreditation, test date, measured CBD per chew next to the label claim, total THC (non-detect and under 0.4 mg per container), the full contaminant panel with pass limits visible (pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvents, microbials, mycotoxins), an overall pass, a link to the lab-hosted PDF for authenticity (SC Labs and ACS Laboratory host public COA pages with their own QR), the feeding chart, and a "which size is my dog" prompt. A 404 or a foreign domain behind a COA QR reads as a fake to buyers, so the page has to exist before the first pouch prints.

5b. What the dogs actually look like (from the 9 photos in reference/dogs/butters/)

  • Butters (Medium): big shaggy grey-and-white dog, bearded-collie or sheepdog type, long fringe over the eyes, tongue out, mostly grey body with white chest, legs and beard. Not the yellow dog in the placeholder illustration; the "Butter" yellow stays in the palette as the brand's accent, not as his coat.
  • Bagel (Small): tricolor brown, black and white dog, hound or spaniel mix, short coat, floppy ears, often in an orange sweater. Several of the nine photos include Bagel too, so there is reference for both dogs already.
  • Large: Great Pyrenees, big white dog with a soft face; no photos yet.
  • Illustration direction for all three: flat-color portraits with a limited palette (grey, white, brown, black, cream) and a blend-color bandana. Photos are phone snapshots, so the photo-hero direction (C) will need a proper studio shoot or careful cut-outs.

6. Open questions for Beau

  1. Dog casting is settled: Bagel on Small, Butters (the big fluffy one, 9 photos in reference/dogs/butters/) on Medium, a Great Pyrenees like the one Beau used to have on Large. Still needed: photos of Bagel, and any photos of the Pyrenees (otherwise the Large dog is generated from breed reference and matched to the illustration style).
  2. Does the Pyrenees get a name on the Large bag? The brand name stays "Bagel & Butters"; the Large bag can introduce the third dog by name on the back.
  3. City and ZIP for the "Distributed by" line, and the contact email you want printed.
  4. Illustrated portraits or real photos as the default (direction B vs C)? The Higgsfield round will show both.
