Cannabinoids in dogs: what the science says
Research date: 2026-11-05. Peer-reviewed veterinary papers wherever they exist; rodent and human data are labeled as such. "No canine data" is stated where that is the case. Weight conversions used: 15 lb = 6.8 kg, 40 lb = 18.1 kg, 90 lb = 40.8 kg.
The five findings that drive the formulation
- CBDA beats CBD on absorption in dogs, by a lot. At the same 1 mg/kg dose, CBDA reaches 2 to 4 times the blood level of CBD (Cornell 2025 isolate study: 236 vs 70 ng/mL; Wakshlag 2020 soft chew: 510 vs 226 ng/mL). CBDA is also cleared by a different liver pathway (glucuronidation, not CYP), which matters for drug interactions.
- CBD:CBDA 1:1 is the only ratio with real canine efficacy trials. Two positive placebo-controlled trials (Gamble 2018 osteoarthritis, Loewinger 2022 itch) and one negative (post-surgical pain). All funded by ElleVet, no independent replication yet, but nothing else comes close.
- Neutral CBG is almost inert in dogs. 2 mg/kg twice daily for two weeks produced 5 ng/mL in serum; the acid form CBGA reached 250 ng/mL, about 40 times more (Amstutz 2022). If CBG goes in a chew, it has to be CBGA. Even then, no canine efficacy trial exists.
- CBN has no canine data. No pharmacokinetics, no efficacy, no safety study in dogs. Sleep data are rats and mixed human trials. CBN is a weak CB1 agonist (about 10% of THC) in a species with dense CB1 receptors. It is a marketing ingredient today.
- Full-spectrum did not improve absorption over isolates in the Cornell 2025 head-to-head. The measurable advantage of hemp extracts is their CBDA content, not an "entourage" of minors. Broad-spectrum with non-detect THC is the right choice for labeling and safety, not for a synergy claim.
Summary per cannabinoid
| Cannabinoid | Canine absorption | Canine efficacy by use | Safe range in dogs | Verdict for a chew |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CBD | Low bioavailability (under 20โ31%). Oil 2 mg/kg: Cmax about 145 ng/mL, Tmax 1.5โ2 h, half-life about 4 h. Accumulates with daily dosing. | Arthritis/mobility: B (3 positive RCTs, 2 negative). Anxiety/stress: B minus (Mars-funded single-dose and 6-month positives; UK fireworks and Italian shelter negatives). Seizures as adjunct: B. Itch: B minus. GI, appetite, cognition: none. | 1โ4 mg/kg/day well tolerated for 6โ9 months. ALP (a liver enzyme) rises in over half of dogs at 4 mg/kg/day and above, bone-isoform driven, not damage. | The workhorse. Studied doses are 2โ5 mg/kg/day. |
| CBDA | 2โ4 times CBD's exposure at equal dose. Soft chew at about 1 mg/kg: Cmax 510 ng/mL. Lecithin and sesame oil gave the best two-week retention. | Only tested as 1:1 with CBD: arthritis B, itch B minus, post-op pain negative. | 1 mg/kg twice daily for 90 days with CBGA: no ALP rise, minor GI signs (Koll 2026). | Highest-value ingredient per mg. Needs cold processing. |
| CBG / CBGA | Neutral CBG barely absorbed; CBGA about 40 times better. | No canine efficacy data. Mouse colitis and one small human anxiety study only. | 2 mg/kg twice daily for 2 weeks and 1 mg/kg CBGA twice daily for 90 days: no adverse events. | Use CBGA if at all; still unproven. |
| CBN | No canine data. | No canine data. Rat sleep study positive; human 20 mg reduced night awakenings in one trial and failed in a 2026 insomnia RCT. | No canine safety data. | Marketing-grade for dogs. |
| CBC | No canine PK; CBCA appeared as a trace analyte in Koll 2026. | No canine data. Mouse gut studies only. | None. | Marketing-grade. |
| Terpenes (linalool, myrcene, caryophyllene) | No canine data. | No canine data. Mouse-level only. | Linalool/lavender toxic to dogs at high ingested amounts. | Flavor-level only; no claims. |
Grade key: A = two or more adequately powered placebo-controlled canine trials agreeing; B = at least one canine placebo-controlled trial, small or with conflicting trials; C = uncontrolled canine or rodent/human only.
By line
Chill
| Study | Finding | Dose |
|---|---|---|
| Hunt 2023 (Waltham) RCT | 4 mg/kg CBD two hours before separation or a car ride: dogs rated less stressed, lower cortisol in one paradigm | 4 mg/kg once |
| Flint 2024 (Waltham) 6-month RCT | 4 mg/kg/day THC-free CBD: lower cortisol at weeks 0, 8, 16, not 24; fewer stress behaviors; effect faded as placebo dogs habituated | 4 mg/kg/day |
| Flint 2025 crossover, n=54 | 2 and 4 mg/kg CBD alone did nothing; 2 mg/kg CBD plus L-tryptophan plus alpha-casozepine blunted the cortisol rise (p=0.016), "mild" | 2 mg/kg + co-actives |
| Morris 2020 fireworks model | 1.4 mg/kg/day for a week: no effect; trazodone worked, CBD did not | negative |
| Marliani 2024 shelter dogs | No behavioral difference; hair cortisol rose in the CBD group | negative |
What this supports: situational use at about 4 mg/kg two hours before the stressor, or daily use with a fading effect. Low daily doses failed. The one canine trial of a CBD-plus-botanical blend used alpha-casozepine and tryptophan, not chamomile or L-theanine.
Mobility
| Study | Finding | Dose |
|---|---|---|
| Gamble 2018 (Cornell) crossover, n=16 | 2 mg/kg CBD/CBDA 1:1 oil twice daily for 4 weeks: owner and vet pain scores improved; ALP rose | 2 mg/kg q12h |
| Verrico 2020 RCT, n=20 | 20 mg/day (0.5 mg/kg) and 50 mg/day isolate: dose-dependent improvement; liposomal 20 mg matched naked 50 mg | 0.5โ1.2 mg/kg/day |
| Talsma 2024 (CSU) crossover, n=39 | 5 mg/kg broad-spectrum twice daily for 45 days: vet and owner scores improved; ALP rose more with an NSAID; about 10% GI signs | 5 mg/kg q12h |
| Mejia 2021 (CSU) crossover, n=23 | 2.5 mg/kg full-spectrum twice daily for 6 weeks: no difference from placebo | negative |
| Klatzkow 2023 post-TPLO, n=44 | 2โ2.5 mg/kg CBD/CBDA twice daily: no benefit on acute surgical pain | negative |
What this supports: chronic arthritis, not acute pain. Positive trials run from 0.5 mg/kg/day isolate to 10 mg/kg/day broad-spectrum; the most-cited protocol is 2 mg/kg twice daily of 1:1 CBD/CBDA.
Daily
Long-term tolerability is the evidence base, not efficacy: 4 mg/kg/day for 6 months (Bradley 2022) and 5 mg/kg/day for 36 weeks (Corsato Alvarenga 2024) were well tolerated with ALP elevation; 1 mg/kg CBDA plus 1 mg/kg CBGA twice daily for 90 days showed no ALP rise (Koll 2026). Itch: 2 mg/kg CBD/CBDA reduced pruritus (Loewinger 2022). Nothing in dogs for GI, appetite, cognition or immune function.
Dose translation against 5 / 10 / 20 mg chews
| Study dose | 15 lb | 40 lb | 90 lb | Used as |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 mg/kg/day | 3.4 mg | 9 mg | 20 mg | Verrico low arm, once daily, positive |
| 1 mg/kg | 7 mg | 18 mg | 41 mg | Cornell PK; Koll CBDA/CBGA twice daily |
| 2 mg/kg | 14 mg | 36 mg | 82 mg | Gamble, Loewinger, twice daily |
| 4 mg/kg | 27 mg | 72 mg | 163 mg | Hunt single dose; Bradley, Flint once daily |
- A 15 lb dog on one 5 mg chew is at 0.7 mg/kg; on a 10 mg chew, 1.5 mg/kg. Fine.
- A 40 lb dog on one 20 mg chew is at 1.1 mg/kg, inside Verrico's positive range for arthritis, below every other protocol.
- A 90 lb dog on one 20 mg chew is at 0.5 mg/kg, the floor. At Gamble's dose it would need eight 20 mg chews a day.
- CBDA is the lever. Because 1 mg CBDA gives roughly 2โ3.5 mg CBD's worth of blood exposure, a 10 mg CBD + 10 mg CBDA chew behaves more like a 30โ40 mg CBD chew on blood levels, at the same ingredient weight. No trial proves exposure equals efficacy per mg, but Gamble and Loewinger used exactly this 1:1 mix.
Ratios and combinations
| Combination | Canine evidence | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| CBD:CBDA 1:1 | PK in two studies; two positive efficacy RCTs; one negative | Best-supported ratio in dogs |
| CBD + CBG | PK only; neutral CBG inert; CBGA absorbed and safe for 90 days | Marketing until a trial exists; use CBGA if used |
| CBD + CBN | Nothing in dogs | Marketing; adds a weak CB1 agonist |
| CBD + CBC | Nothing in dogs | Marketing |
| Broad-spectrum vs isolate | No absorption advantage (Cornell 2025); both forms showed arthritis effects in separate trials | Choose broad-spectrum for THC-free labeling and CBDA, not for synergy |
| CBD + alpha-casozepine + tryptophan | One canine crossover (n=54): blunted cortisol where CBD alone did not | The only blend with canine data |
Safety notes for the label and the vet conversation
- ALP elevation is expected at 2 mg/kg twice daily and above; it tracks the bone isoform, not liver damage, but should be disclosed and monitored. NSAID co-use raises it further.
- Common adverse events: soft stool, vomiting, reduced appetite at higher doses; sedation and ataxia at seizure-trial doses.
- CBD and CBDA inhibit canine tramadol metabolism in vitro; no effect on the midazolam pathway.
- No canine pregnancy data; rabbit data show fetal effects, so keep the "not proven safe in pregnant animals" caution.
- Dogs have dense CB1 receptors; THC signs appear around 0.3โ0.5 mg/kg. Non-detect THC removes accumulation and labeling risk.
- Practical ceiling from long-term data: 5 mg/kg/day CBD.
Processing and stability
- CBDA converts to CBD with heat: half-life about 3.9 hours at 80 ยฐC, 43 minutes at 95 ยฐC, 14 minutes at 110 ยฐC (Wang 2016). Baking destroys the CBDA claim; hot extrusion erodes it; cold-formed soft chews (under 50 ยฐC, no water) preserve it. Wakshlag's cold chew delivered the highest CBDA blood levels of any form tested.
- CBD oxidizes with heat, light and air: at room temperature, 95% remains for about 117 days in solution; refrigerated it holds a year. Use low water activity (0.6 or below), opaque pouches, nitrogen flush or oxygen scavenger, mixed tocopherols or rosemary extract, and store at 25 ยฐC or below.
- CBN is the oxidation product of THC, not CBD. In a THC-free chew, CBN cannot appear with age; any CBN on the label has to be added isolate.
- Test finished chews, not just the input oil: potency for CBD, CBDA, THC, plus homogeneity across chews.
Co-actives with canine evidence
| Co-active | Evidence in dogs | Grade | Typical daily amount, 40 lb dog |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alpha-casozepine (Zylkene) | Several small trials, one 2026 placebo-controlled crossover, plus the Flint 2025 blend | B minus | 15 mg/kg, about 270 mg |
| L-theanine (Anxitane) | Two manufacturer studies, weak | C | 100 mg twice daily |
| L-tryptophan | Mixed; one large RCT null | C | 10โ15 mg/kg |
| Magnolia + phellodendron | One blinded thunderstorm study | C plus | per label |
| Melatonin, chamomile, valerian, passion flower | No controlled canine trials | none | โ |
| Glucosamine HCl + chondroitin | One RCT vs carprofen, slower onset; reviews call it conflicting | B minus / C | about 500 mg + 400 mg |
| UC-II undenatured collagen | Several RCTs, one matching an NSAID on mobility | B | 10โ40 mg, weight-independent |
| Green-lipped mussel | One positive RCT vs placebo; others null | B minus | not published |
| Turmeric (P54FP) | One RCT: vet assessment improved, owner scores not | C | not published |
| Boswellia | One open-label study, GI side effects in some | C | 400 mg per 10 kg |
| MSM | No canine controlled evidence | none | โ |
| Omega-3 EPA/DHA | Strong diet-level evidence, but effective dose (about 2.7 g/day) is far beyond a chew | A minus at diet level | not reachable in a chew |
| Probiotics (BL999 for calm; SF68 for GI) | One conference abstract (calm); one null shelter RCT (GI) | C | per label |
| Pumpkin, flaxseed | No canine evidence; dogs convert flax ALA poorly | none | โ |
