Payments and paid ads for a hemp CBD pet chew (US, November 2026)
Research date: 2026-11-05. Policy pages read directly where reachable; items marked unverified could not be read at the primary source.
Headlines
- Square left CBD. Sellers were told on Aug 7, 2026 to remove every CBD and hemp item by Oct 15, 2026; hemp-focused accounts closed in early November. Square cannot be the farmers-market reader.
- Stripe, Shopify Payments, PayPal, Braintree, Amazon Pay: no. Stripe's list (Sept 22, 2026) prohibits CBD edibles and restricts the rest; its own FAQ says it cannot support any CBD product. Shopify Payments "doesn't support the sale of hemp, CBD and THC products."
- Shopify as a storefront is fine once you accept its US hemp requirements (under 0.3% THC, no medical claims, licenses, notify Shopify within 10 days of any FDA or FTC action). It names Bankful and DigiPay as gateways. Hemp merchants lose Shopify SMS, Shop Pay, and Shopify's own card reader.
- A pet ingestible cannot get LegitScript certification, which Google and Meta require to run CBD ads. LegitScript's FAQ lists "pet products" and "ingestible CBD" as ineligible. So paid traffic is a no-CBD-mention brand and benefit plan, which is exactly what ElleVet (about 290 live Meta ads), Pet Releaf, Honest Paws, Kradle and Charlotte's Web run today.
- The Dec 11, 2026 rule is already in underwriting. Processors are asking for per-container total-THC COAs and SKU lists now; full-spectrum edibles are the category most likely to be cut off. Isolate and non-detect broad-spectrum inputs make the file easy.

Recommended stack
- Shopify storefront with the hemp requirements accepted, or keep the current Next.js site and add a hosted checkout from the gateway. No SMS, no Shop Pay.
- Apply to two providers in parallel so one approval is in hand before Dec 11: Bankful (Shopify-native) and a CBD-underwritten merchant account behind Authorize.net from Easy Pay Direct, PaymentCloud or Corepay. Expect 3–5% effective, a 5–10% rolling reserve for 90–180 days, and 1–7 days of underwriting.
- Underwriting file: EIN and articles, owner ID, voided check, 3–6 months of bank statements, per-SKU COAs showing total THC including THCA and mg per container, supplier list, SKU catalog with mg per chew and per bag, refund, shipping and privacy pages, a ship-to exclusion list, an age gate, and zero disease claims anywhere on the site.
- Backup rail: ACH or eCheck so revenue continues if card processing pauses.
- Farmers markets and wholesale: a terminal from the high-risk provider (PaymentCloud, Corepay, Host all place them) or a hemp-focused POS like Cova; invoice wholesale from the gateway's virtual terminal or ACH. Never Stripe, Square or PayPal invoices.
- Faire allows only topical CBD; Amazon prohibits CBD; Chewy lists hemp-extract pet chews from NASC-seal brands by invitation.

What gets accounts banned
Any treat, cure, prevent, anxiety, pain or seizure claim for dogs; "CBD" in ad text, headline, display URL or product title; linking to a page that sells ingestible CBD even if the ad does not mention it (Google reviews the destination; LegitScript requires every CBD product on the site to be certified); cloaking or "safe pages"; promotional SMS (no US carrier accepts CBD or hemp SMS under 10DLC; Klaviyo, Shopify and Toast all block it).
The plan that works
- Meta brand and benefit campaigns with zero mention of CBD, CBDA or CBGA anywhere in the ad, image text, page name or captions; 21+ targeting; landing page with no disease claims. "Hemp-based calming chews, sized for your dog." Run from a verified Business Manager with a clean pixel and keep a second Page and ad account ready.
- Podcast and Spotify host-reads naming the brand and "calming chews."
- Affiliates and creators: 15–30% affiliate programs (ElleVet pays 12–30%), pet creators and UGC with FTC disclosure, rescue-org and trainer affiliates, vet-clinic co-marketing, retail co-op with independent pet stores.
- Email (Klaviyo with cannabis-category approval), SEO content, Chewy listing titled "hemp extract."
- Snap as a test through a sales rep.
- A separate topical line (a hemp paw balm on its own domain with no ingestibles) is the only route to LegitScript, and even then Google limits it to three states.
LegitScript, for the record
Product certification $500–650 per application plus $750–1,000 a year per product; website certification $800 plus $1,600 a year. Eligible: topicals, cosmetics, whole flower. Not eligible: foods, supplements, ingestibles, tinctures, vapes, pet products. Rule of thumb from their own page: applied to the body is eligible, goes into the body is not.
